Bicycles

From cycle shop to manufacturer

The Tacx company started in 1957 as an ordinary cycle shop and has since become an innovative company with an unconditioned passion for the sport of cycling. Founder Koos Tacx has, together with his wife, sons, daughter and staff, achieved that the name Tacx has become an international A-brand that breathes quality. The Tacx trainers are being used by the world’s best Pro Teams and are the indispensable training mate for pros, amateurs and recreational cyclists in 54 countries.

Quality first

Quality was and is the most important cornerstone in everything Tacx does. In the early days of the cycle and moped shop components were already being manufactured in-house, because they were better and cheaper. With this move Koos Tacx introduced the ‘there is always room for improvement’ mentality which is still anchored in the company. In 1972 Tacx started manufacturing roller cylinders on a production basis. This turned out to be the beginning of a revolutionary development in the sport of cycling. The rollers became so popular that special competitions were organized for them. They heralded the many cycletrainers that Tacx has developed since. Tacx has a central position in the world of cycling and knows when and where needs arise and what solution is asked for. It is based on this insight that Tacx works on innovations that will be fully developed and ready for production at the exact instant that cyclists are on to the next stage. At Tacx the passion for the sport is the key to a successful business.

A company with a drive

The drive to renew over and over again is typical for the company. Whoever you speak to at Tacx, they all have their hearts in cycle sport and Tacx products. It is one big family with a contagious drive for quality and innovation. From the first idea to the end-product, all staff feel involved. This is why, at the Tacx factory in Wassenaar in the Netherlands, all the lights are on until late in the evening on a regular basis and the car park is full at the weekend. That is, of course, if there is no cycling event scheduled that weekend.

Creating opportunities, creating potential

In the sport of cycling riders create opportunities and make the impossible possible. This is the same in business. As soon as the Tacx people spot an opportunity, they will create the potential. As they did around the year 2000, when for the first time Tacx coupled computer electronics to the cycletrainers. A whole new way of training made its appearance. Not only was information such as speed, power, cadence and heart rate being displayed on a monitor, with the Virtual Reality trainer you could also ride in virtual worlds through the PC and race online against opponents from all over the world. Training with Tacx became entertaining and addictive.

Ready for the future

The Virtual Reality trainers have been developed further since. After the i-Magic and the Fortius the i-Genius was introduced, an ingenious trainer with wireless communication between the brake, the handlebar computer and the PC. The accompanying software programs are also being modernized regularly, the highlight being the Tacx Trainer software 4. With this software, you can’t tell the world on your screen apart from the real world anymore. It is the next big step in the development of Tacx. What once was a small cycle shop, has become so much more than just a name and a product. Riding a Tacx nowadays is a universal synonym for training on a home trainer, whatever the brand. This is the biggest compliment a trendsetter can receive.
